INFRARED A QUICK AND RELIABLE MEASUREMENT, BUT ONE WHICH DOES NOT DISPENSE WITH THE NEED TO CARRY OUT ANALYSIS OF THE SOIL IN THE LABORATORY..:
Which farmer or technician has not dreamt of a field tool which measures the nature and richness of the soil and which is fast, reliable and easy to use?
This innovative and long-awaited service now exists: It is called SPiRiT sol+ and was developed in partnership with ARVALIS and AUREA. It has been available throughout France since June 2019.
It can be used with field crops, as well as in viticulture, arboriculture, market gardening and green spaces.
SPiRiT sol+ uses Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS), which is a light and easily transportable measuring device.
SPiRiT sol+ is a service for measuring variability between plots which does not replace soil analysis, but allows farmers who wish to practise precision farming to regulate additions made to the soil within their plots.
SPiRiT sol+ is the result of many years of research by teams at the ARVALIS Plant Institute and at AUREA.
Over 1,000 samples and data have been collected over several years from a very wide range of soils across the entire French agricultural territory. Thanks to work still being carried out by ARVALIS and AUREA, the database on SPiRiT sol+ is constantly being enriched, helping to improve the reliability of the calibrations and measurements.

DETERMINE IN DETAIL VARIABILITY in the physical, chemical and organic fertility of a plot. :
SPiRiT sol+ is a complete, ‘turnkey’ service: it goes from the taking of the sample to the PK-fertilisation and is adjusted to the format of the modulation console with which the farmer is equipped.
This complete service is provided by AUREA, the leading company in soil analysis in France. SPiRiT sol+ will be offered exclusively to intermediary organisations (cooperatives, traders, chambers of agriculture, consulting firms, etc.) which will ensure distribution to farmers.
SPiRiT sol+ allows the diversity between different plots to be mapped according to the following criteria:
Physical: total clay, silt, sand and limestone content
Organic: organic carbon (%MO), total nitrogen
Nutritional: assimilable phosphorus (Olsen type), potassium, magnesium, calcium.
To counteract the detection limits when using infrared, AUREA proposes to combine the infrared measurement (4 per hectare) with soil analysis (1 per hectare). Infrared is reliable as long as a large number of repetitions are carried out within the same plot and calibrations are accurate and regular. SPiRiT sol+ was designed to supplement ‘traditional’ soil analysis and not to replace it.
PRINCIPLE AND METHOD
The measuring probe on the infrared sensor is placed for only a few seconds on the freshly excavated soil, which has been extracted using an auger. The acquired data is then transferred to the computer connected to the sensor. The measurement results are simultaneously displayed on the screen. These measurements are repeated 3 times per core sample and the whole operation is carried out on 4 core samples spaced 20 metres apart and positioned in a square.
The advantage of the infrared method in the field lies mainly in its ease and speed of use. This makes it possible to increase the number of measurements taken in the field and therefore eliminate part of the measurement uncertainty by having a higher sampling density.
